FAU’s Theatre Lab Kicks Off Its 2024-2025 Season With ‘The Last Yiddish
Theatre Lab, Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) professional resident company, has announced its 2024-2025 MainStage Season, showcasing a dynamic lineup of world premieres and the debut of the “Owl” New Play Festival.
Kicking off the season is “The Last Yiddish Speaker,” presented by the National New Play Network (NNPN) Rolling World Premiere program on Oct. 26. The poignant tale is set in a dystopian future and follows a Jewish family in hiding as they confront their faith and identity after a mysterious, ancient Yiddish-speaking woman arrives on their doorsteps. Directed by American playwright and theater director Deborah Zoe Laufer, it will run until Nov. 10.
Up next is the world premiere of “Two Of Us on the Run” by Steve McMahon, a Scottish actor and writer based in Jupiter.
“This funny, moving, and fast-paced script by a now-local-to-us playwright follows two 16-year-old girls on a modern day ‘Thelma & Louise’-style adventure,” says Matt Stabile, producing artistic director at Theatre Lab. “Audiences at our New Play Festival had an overwhelmingly positive response to the way the script toys with time, space and reality while speaking to the difficulties and dangers of being a young woman in America today. We’re thrilled to share this world premiere with even more members of our local community.” It is scheduled to run from Feb. 4-16.
The final production of the highly anticipated season is the world premiere of “The Impossible Task of Today” by Jeff Bower, an FAU’s Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance alum. Running from April 5-20, the play tackles gun violence, mental health and the influence of social media.
Following Bower’s play, the recently named “Owl” New Play Festival will run April 11-20, featuring full productions of “The Impossible Task of Today” and “The Frankenstein Project” by E.M. Lewis, along with lectures and discussions exploring the plays’ themes in greater depth.
“With our 10th Anniversary season, we wanted to make a splash, and this was the natural next step in our growth as a new play center. Folks can come to Boca for a weekend in April and be fully immersed in the world of new plays. The goal is to continue to expand this annual event, establishing Theatre Lab and FAU as a premier national destination for new play development and production,” says Stabile.
