Florida Atlantic University To Host Annual Festival Repertory Theatre
Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Department of Theatre and Dance, part of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, has announced its summer lineup for the 2025 Festival Repertory Theatre. Performances, which are scheduled to run in June and July, will take place in the Marleen Forkas Studio One Theatre and the University Theatre.
Kicking off the season is Neil Simon’s “Rumors,” running from June 13 to 28. Set in 1988, this fast-paced comedy centers on four couples who gather for a 10th wedding anniversary celebration at the upscale home of New York Deputy Mayor Charley Brock and his wife, Myra. Chaos ensues when Charley is found shot and Myra goes missing, leaving guests scrambling to contain the situation and protect their reputations.
“Simon’s mastery of storytelling and comedic dialogue created a satirical take on the lives of the affluent as he weaves a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking,” states a press release.
Following that is “Freaky Friday the Musical,” running from July 11 to 27. This heartwarming and hilarious adaptation, based on Mary Rodgers’ novel and Bridget Carpenter’s Disney film, follows Katherine and Ellie Blake — a mother and daughter who magically switch bodies on the eve of Katherine’s wedding. As they navigate each other’s lives, they uncover the challenges and joys of their respective worlds, making it a must-see for anyone with a perfectly imperfect family.
New to the Festival Repertory Theatre this year is the Soundwave Play Series, featuring five 10-minute plays written and performed by students and recorded live in front of an audience. Each play is paired with a soundscape designed to immerse spectators in an aural theatrical experience. It runs from July 24 to 27.
Also on the schedule are two big band concerts on June 21 and 22, highlighting the Florida Wind Symphony Jazz Orchestra — FAU’s professional ensemble-in-residence. Attendees can look forward to timeless hits from the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, with the iconic rhythms of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.
