Working to become an Eagle Scout, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) High School student Laura Arbelaez Correa partnered with Boca Helping Hands (BHH) for her Eagle project in October. After constructing her own food collection crates and running food drives, she donated a total of 1,539 pounds of food to the organization.
“Boca Helping Hands is a wonderful organization,” Correa says. “I chose this project because I wanted to be a part of their effort to do good in the community.”
When her final Eagle board is complete early this November, Correa will gain her Eagle Scout title. A dual-enrolled senior at FAU High School, she is not only aiming to become an Eagle Scout but to earn both her bachelor's and high school degrees.
“This was a phenomenal amount of food for one student to bring in,” says Andrew Hagen, executive director of BHH.
Founded in 1998, BHH grew from a soup kitchen to a community lifeline serving hot meals, distributing pantry bags, offering job training and supporting families in crisis with emergency assistance for rent, utilities and child care.
