A mahjong tradition that started around a kitchen table has grown into a new business for four sisters in Boca Raton.
Four Sparrows Mahjong opened Sept. 16 in Mizner Park, offering open play, classes, private event space and a retail boutique selling mahjong accessories. The business was founded by sisters Andrea Reid, Michelle McGovern, Cristina Crenshaw and Danielle Catsman, who learned to play from their mother, Arlene Oyola.
“Mahjong has this wonderful way of bringing people together,” Reid said in a statement. “You sit down to play, but before long you’re talking, laughing and making memories.”
The new storefront aims to serve both longtime players and newcomers interested in learning the game. Four Sparrows offers classes for beginner and intermediate players, open play opportunities and private space for mahjong gatherings, birthdays and other events.
Reid says the business grew out of the sisters' experience playing together and their interest in sharing the game with others.
“Some people will come because they already love mahjong, and others may come because they’re curious and want to learn,” Reid explained in a release. “Either way, we want them to leave feeling like they found their place.”
The shop also carries a selection of mahjong accessories, including tiles, racks, mats and other items used by players.
Four Sparrows Mahjong is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
