The Symphonia’s 20th Anniversary Season Kicks Off Nov. 17
The Symphonia, South Florida’s premier chamber orchestra, will kick off its 20th Anniversary Season on Nov. 17 with Concert I, featuring principal conductor Alastair Willis and violin soloist Andrés Cárdenes. The concert will be held at the Roberts Theater at St. Andrew’s School at 3 p.m.
The performance will include “Celebration Overture” by James M. Stephenson, “Violin Concert No. 5” by Henri Vieuxtemps and “Pulcinella Suite” by Ígor Stravinsky.
Willis, who serves as The Symphonia’s artistic advisor and music director of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, has conducted prestigious orchestras around the world, including the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Phillharmonic, Mexico City Philharmonic, China National Orchestra and Orquestra Sinfónica de Rio de Janeiro. His recording of Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les Sortileges” with Nashville Symphony and Opera for Naxos earned a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Album in 2009.
Cárdenes, Grammy-nominated violinist and conductor, boasts a distinguished career spanning 40 years. Following his second prize win at the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition, he has performed with hundreds of orchestras across four continents. Cárdenes is currently a Distinguished Artist-In-Residence at Lynn University’s Conservatory of Music.
