The ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius said, “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” Whether it’s the way you approach your work, your passions or the people around you, there’s something to be said for showing up fully. It’s something I feel deeply passionate about — and something I’m fortunate to see reflected in the men in my life. That spirit runs throughout this year’s May Men’s Issue, in which we highlight individuals who bring intention, curiosity and a distinct point of view to everything they do.
Take our cover subject, Phil Rosenthal. Known for his hit series “Somebody Feed Phil,” Rosenthal has an appetite for life — and food — that has made him a beloved presence. In “Phil Is Still Hungry” (page 62), we explore how his signature warmth, humor and sense of wonder bring people closer together.
But connection is only part of the equation — how we sustain ourselves over time matters just as much. As we get older, our understanding of what it means to be strong begins to shift. In “Built To Last,” (page 68), we look at why building and maintaining muscle matters, not just for appearance, but for the ability to stay mobile, independent and feeling our best.
Next, we turn to Ian Ziering, whose career has taken many turns since his breakout role in “Beverly Hills, 90210.” In “The Long Game” (page 74), he opens up about his staying power in the industry, embracing new opportunities and what it means to continue evolving professionally and personally.
We also take a close look at the sports landscape in “The State Of Play” (page 80), in which we examine how the games we watch — and, in some cases, play — have shifted across generations. Whether you gravitate toward Major League Baseball or Major League Soccer, this story offers a fascinating examination of the forces shaping what we tune into — and why. As a mom, I am so grateful my sons have exposed me to sports events I might never have otherwise experienced in person or on TV.
As always, my hope is that within these pages, you’ll find something that resonates — a story that informs, inspires or simply reminds you to lean in a little more fully.
This issue might focus on men, but May is also when we celebrate Mother’s Day, and I’m reminded of the many women who play an ongoing role in shaping my life in big and small ways. I am truly blessed and grateful to be surrounded by so many wonderful females — birth family and chosen family. Wishing you a day filled with good health, love, laughter and appreciation. Celebrate all the estrogen that is in your life. I know I will!
With gratitude,
