San Sebastián, the coastal city in Spain’s Basque Country celebrated worldwide for its culinary traditions, will once again bring history and innovation together when San Sebastián Gastronomika Euskadi Basque Country returns Oct. 5–7.
The 28th edition of the internationally renowned congress turns its spotlight on a milestone that changed the way the world thinks about food: the creation of New Basque Cuisine 50 years ago. The event’s theme, “The Spark That Ignited the Fire,” pays tribute to a movement that transformed Basque gastronomy and helped reimagine Spanish cuisine.
The gathering brings together some of the world’s biggest culinary celebrities, including French chefs Pierre Gagnaire and Michel Troisgros and Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio, who is well known to South Florida diners for La Mar, the acclaimed restaurant he operated for more than a decade on Brickell Key. They will join New Basque Cuisine leaders Elena Arzak and Pedro Subijana.
Among the honorees at the event will be chef Martín Berasategui, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award; wine critic Luis Gutiérrez, who will be presented with the Gueridón de Oro; and writer Anya von Bremzen, who will get the Pau Albornà i Torras Gastronomic Journalism Award.
The 2026 edition also includes a festival devoted to cod, a fish deeply woven into Basque cuisine and culture. From groundbreaking chefs to celebrated authors and critics, San Sebastián Gastronomika will serve as both a reflection on a region’s culinary rise and a look toward the future of food.
