Times have changed, and the digital era has taken over. Instead of trading cards that you can hold in your hand, people are selling NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and Marvel is getting in on the action.
The company announced that it is teaming up with Orbis Blockchain Technologies Limited (a digital collectibles company operating the VeVe digital collectibles app) to launch a global digital collectibles experience for millions of Marvel fans and collectors around the world.
What are NFTs? Well, according to Investopedia, they are unique cryptographic tokens that exist on a blockchain and cannot be replicated. In the case of Marvel, they represent real-world items such as artwork.
Using this app, fans can “interact with official Marvel NFT digital collectibles, 3D statues and digital comic books through mixed reality on VeVe’s groundbreaking app platform,” according to a news release.
“Marvel has been exploring with VeVe how to make the Marvel digital collecting experience as special as the physical experience, and we are excited to finally be able to share this vision with our fans,” Daniel Fink, vice president of business development and strategy at Marvel Entertainment, said in a news release.
It should not be a surprise that Marvel is dabbling in NFTs. Earlier this year, José Delbo, the 87-year-old former Wonder Woman and Transformers artist, sold several NFTs for nearly $2 million. However, legal issues over who owns the rights to the art have come into play. Stay tuned!
