Florida dominates GoFundMe’s 2024 “Year in Help” Report with six of the nation’s top 10 most generous cities — including Boca Raton, which ranked 10th.
Despite numerous cities stepping up, it wasn’t enough to make Florida one of the most generous states.
That honor went to Vermont, followed by Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Maine. Rounding out the top 10 most giving states were Connecticut, New Jersey, Colorado, Washington and New York.
Other Florida cities in the top 10 include Sarasota (2), Fort Lauderdale (3), Doral (4), Orlando (6) and Miami (8).
According to the website, two donations are made approximately every second on average via GoFundMe. The average donation is $77. Contributions support a wide range of causes, from helping families in financial distress to raising funds for animal welfare — and just about everything in between. Last year, nearly $55 million was raised to assist with housing and living expenses alone.
With so many natural disasters, giving to support those impacted by them was strong. Nearly $235 million was raised in 2024 to aid in natural disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts worldwide. One group raised $100,000 to send volunteers and supplies to areas devastated by Hurricane Helene, while more than $10 million was collected to assist communities recovering from severe flooding in Valencia, Spain.
Last year, GoFundMe expanded into new markets, launching in Latin America with Mexico and entering the Caribbean with Puerto Rico.
