If you’re ever in Lima, Peru, Maido is a must. The restaurant, known for its fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine, claimed the No. 1 spot on the 2025 World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
Now in its 23rd year, the annual ranking “provides a snapshot of some of the best destinations for unique culinary experiences, in addition to being a barometer for and a pioneer of global gastronomic trends,” according to a news release.
Ceremonies for the awards have taken place around the globe. In 2024, the event was held in Las Vegas; this year, it took place in June at Lingotto Fiere in Turin, Italy.
Only one U.S. restaurant made the 2025 list: Atomix in New York City, which placed at No. 12 and specializes in modern Korean cuisine.
The list is determined by 1,120 voters from 28 regions worldwide, including chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and well-traveled gourmets. Any restaurant is eligible for nomination, as long as the person nominating it has dined there in the past 18 months.
This year, Thailand and Italy led the rankings, with six restaurants each, followed by Japan, Peru, France and Spain, with four apiece.
Beyond the main list, additional awards were given: World’s Best Female Chef (Thai-Australian chef and restaurateur Pichaya ‘Pam’ Soontornyanakij); One to Watch, (Khufu’s in Egypt); World’s Best Pastry Chef (Maxime Frédéric of Cheval Blanc in Paris); and the Sustainable Restaurant Award (Celele in Cartagena, Colombia).
