If someone greets you with “Gung Hay Fat Choy,” they’re wishing you happiness and prosperity for the Chinese New Year, which begins on Jan. 29.
This year marks the Year of the Snake, a sign associated with wisdom, charm, elegance and transformation. Those born under this sign are believed to be intuitive, strategic and intelligent.
In China, celebrations begin with the new moon and last 15 days. It’s also known as the Lunar New Year. Families get together to eat, drink and honor their ancestors. Festivities include dragon dances, with participants carrying long, colorful dragon costumes through the streets.
There are many Chinese New Year events taking place right in our own backyard. The Pompano Beach Cultural Center has scheduled a celebration for Jan. 31. It will feature traditional performances, martial arts demonstration and, of course, Chinese food. The Village of Wellington will celebrate on Jan. 31 at the Wellington Amphitheater from 6-9 p.m.
A little further north, Luminary Green Park in Downtown Orlando will host the Celebrate Lunar, a fusion of Asia’s diverse cultures and cuisines — from Chinese and Korean to Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, Cambodian and more.
