When the #MeToo movement gained national attention in 2017 as a call to action against sexual violence, another movement with the same name had already begun a year earlier — this one focused on uplifting and empowering women in all aspects of life.
Founded in 2016 by motivational speaker, author and certified life coach Symonia Montgomery, Girl, Me Too is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women and girls heal, grow and empower themselves while building strong, supportive relationships with one another.
The “me too” aspect recognizes that women often experience many of the same struggles. For example, you might say, “I don’t feel safe walking by myself at night.” And another woman might answer, “Girl, me too.”
The Girl, Me Too movement has a special day set aside — April 7 — to recognize the strength and endurance of women of all ages, providing the opportunity to show support for one another. While first celebrated in 2016, the Registrar of National Day Calendar proclaimed National Girl, Me Too Day to be observed annually beginning in 2018.
There are many ways to mark the day. Take time out to meet with other women to encourage and uplift. Share your experiences, discuss overcoming challenges and learn from each other. Take to social media to spread awareness or find your own way to empower and support the women around you.
