The traditional South Florida Fair in January may have been smaller than usual due to COVID-19 safety concerns but a second fair running May 7-23 gives the community another chance to have more fun.
CDC guidelines (masks, social distancing) will be followed, just as they were in January, and many of the same indoor and outdoor attractions will return. All the rides normally available at the January fair will be on hand, including the Midway Sky Eye, North America’s largest traveling Ferris wheel, reaching a peak height of 155 feet. Riders can see for miles from the top.
Also returning: local and tribute bands, an ice skating show, racing pigs and a big sand sculpture. Buildings will be open for shopping with vendors, arts and crafts and displays of live birds, bees and butterflies. At the Celebrating Our Farmers exhibit, the Sugar Cane Growers, USA Sugar, Florida Dairy Farmers and Sunshine Sweet (Sweet Corn) will display photos and items that exhibit new technology.
Visitors will be able to chow down on beloved fair foods like funnel cake, corn dogs and deep-fried Oreos.
“We have proven the ability to make adjustments as needed,” Vicki Chouris, the fair’s president and CEO, said in a press release. “In the name of safety, most people realize why we decided to scale back our traditional fair, but we also know they were disappointed. Now they get two different types of fairs for the price of one, all in the same year.”
Those who bought a ticket online from the South Florida Fair’s website for the mini fair in January will get one free Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday admission to the fair in May.
