Calling all racing fans: Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes, is gearing up to host the Formula 1 (F1) Miami Grand Prix this month.
Though the sport has traditionally drawn male audiences, a 2022 article in Forbes suggests that F1 is no longer just a boys’ club. In fact, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali shared that women now make up 40% of global fans, an 8% jump from 2017.
Dubbed the Miami International Autodrome, the 3.363-mile-long track, which runs around the Miami Gardens stadium, features 19 corners and allows for speeds nearing 200 mph. Last year, the event drew about 275,000 fans to the stands.
Practice rounds and sprint qualifying take place May 2 and 3, with the final race set for May 4. Only 20 elite drivers make the cut — and it’s truly where the rubber meets the road.
There are 24 F1 races spanning five continents each season. Miami is the sixth stop of the season. Though still relatively new to the circuit, this year marks the fourth time Miami has hosted the event, starting with the inaugural race which was held on May 8, 2022.
The Grand Prix celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Unlike many sports where winners take top financial prizes, the drivers are not rewarded based on where they place or if they win. Instead, prizes are based on the Constructors’ Championship, which is awarded to the team with the most points accumulated across all races during a season and based on the combined results of their drivers. That said, drivers do earn sizable bonuses and salaries.
