Home.
Four simple letters — with such powerful meaning. I’m not one to be at a loss for words, but when defining what home means to me, I turn to the great novelist Charles Dickens, who wrote: “Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than any magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration.”
The City of Boca Raton became my home nearly 30 years ago. In its warm embrace, I raised my two sons, built a thriving business and made countless friends. Those fortunate to live among its lush landscapes, scenic parks and close-knit community know the magic Dickens was referring to — that powerful sense of belonging that turns a place into a home.
Which is why I am thrilled, humbled and honored to present this long-awaited special Boca Raton Centennial Issue, celebrating the 100th anniversary of a city that has shaped so many lives — including my own.
Boca Raton is not only beautiful, it has a lengthy and fascinating history. Our story “A Century In The Making” (page 88), explores its earliest beginnings — from its agricultural roots and diverse settlers to the impact of Florida’s railway boom. You’ll discover the stories behind the people for whom places were named — like Mizner and Morikami — as well as the city’s western expansion, along with fun facts that may just surprise you.
Beyond its rich history are the people working every day to make the city shine. “The People Of Boca” (page 104), showcases nine extraordinary individuals, most of whom I am proud to call friends, who dedicate their time, talents and resources to help make Boca the fabulous and unique place it is.
One hundred years is quite a milestone, but what’s even more remarkable is how Boca Raton has grown and evolved along the way. In “From Fields To Fortune,” (page 118) we begin with the vision of Addison Mizner and explore the transformations our city has undergone from then until today. It’s an incredible, inspiring timeline marked by drive, ingenuity and success.
We follow with “A Life Of Purpose” (page 132), which spotlights the extraordinary generosity of financier, philanthropist and longtime friend — Leon Cooperman. His wisdom, kindness and selflessness has always served as a guiding light to me. I was so honored to sit with him and talk about his love and commitment to the City of Boca Raton and beyond. Leon and his wife Toby’s impact on the community is reflected in the countless buildings that bear their names, a lasting testament to their generosity. They have helped improve so many lives on the East Coast.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how dedicated our community is to giving back. It’s almost impossible to think of Boca Raton without recognizing the countless philanthropic organizations and charitable events that help define it. Our piece, “Rooted In Generosity” (page 140), dives deep into the efforts that have shaped this community, helping those who need it the most. Whether the focus is on children and education, health care and medical research, arts and culture, the environment and animal welfare or community and social services, the people and organizations of Boca Raton support each cause with selfless dedication.
What follows is a story very dear to my heart. Rabbi David Steinhardt of B’nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton announced his retirement after 31 years. For 26 of those, he has been my family’s rabbi, standing beside us at our most meaningful moments, from joyful celebrations to challenging times. We celebrate him and all he’s done for this community in our story “Guided By Grace” (page 154). He’s not only one of Boca’s most cherished spiritual leaders, he’s also a source of wisdom, kindness and strength. He’s provided so much to our community, has left an indelible mark and will be strongly missed. It’s an absolute privilege to share his story with you in this landmark issue.
Of course, faith isn’t the only thing that defines our city — Boca Raton is also known for its impeccable taste and signature look. Our fun piece, “Boca In Vogue” (page 162), explores the many looks of a city where laid-back luxury and high fashion go hand-in-hand. Whether it’s enjoying an alfresco brunch, a leisurely day at the country club or a glamorous night at one of our many charity balls, there’s a beloved aesthetic that is unmistakably Boca. We’ll also take a look at the beautiful Mediterranean Revival designs that first graced our city and all the modern, ocean-inspired spaces that have followed since. With so many country clubs and gated communities offering a luxury lifestyle, it’s easy to see why living here feels like a permanent vacation.
“What must it feel like to be 100?” we wondered — so we asked. For this special issue, we interviewed six local centenarians for our La Vida Boca section (page 52) to hear their reflections on a century of life and the role Boca Raton has played along the way.
As you flip through this issue, you’ll find that the entire magazine is a love letter to our wonderful city. In Buzz (page 42), we highlight little-known facts about Boca Raton — including its surprising connection to German U-boats — while our Media Blitz (page 64), which typically features Hollywood headlines, shifts its focus to our hometown. (Pop quiz: What famous movie from the ‘80s filmed scenes at The Boca Raton?) Destinations (page 80) celebrates the newly renovated Beach Club, which is absolutely gorgeous. Our Taste section (page 233) showcases two beloved local restaurants and one longstanding bar. Our Giving Back section always sheds light on a nonprofit organization serving the community, and our story on the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League (page 288) is no exception — its legacy of compassion speaks volumes.
I want to thank my incredible team at The Boca Raton Observer for understanding my vision and making it a reality. You truly went above and beyond this month. I can’t help but smile — and feel a sense of awe — with every page I turn. A special thank you to Susan Gillis, Mary Csar, the Boca Historical Society and The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum for their invaluable contribution and guidance throughout the creation of this Centennial Issue. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
I blinked, and 30 years in Boca Raton passed. I suppose it’s like the old saying goes: “Time flies when you’re having fun.” I can’t wait to see what the next 30 bring — for me, and the city I am so proud to call home.
Happy 100th to a place that’s given us all so much!
With gratitude,
Linda L. Behmoiras
