Crossing the Rickenbacker Causeway on my way to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami, I feel vacation mode kick in. Rising above brilliant turquoise water, the 3.6-mile thoroughfare, shared by joggers, cyclists and strolling couples, sets the tone for the getaway ahead. A few minutes later, the road narrows alongside Crandon Park into a lush passage lined with swaying palms, and, by the time I pull up to the resort, everyday life feels miles away.
Part of The Ritz-Carlton’s appeal is its consistency as a luxury brand. That’s evident at the Key Biscayne property, which recently underwent a $100 million renovation that makes the most of its spectacular setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite the ocean view to shine, while pathways outside wind through tropical greenery, giving the resort an unmistakable “White Lotus” vibe. Two pools — a quieter, adults-only retreat and a livelier, family-friendly option — are separated by a sprawling lawn sporting a miniature putting green and a Ping-Pong table.
Expect the usual plush beds, marble bathrooms and private terraces that have become synonymous with The Ritz-Carlton experience. The 421 guest rooms and suites embrace muted tones, allowing the ocean and lush landscape to take center stage. Guests who book a room with Club Level access can enjoy entry to a private lounge on the ninth floor that offers rotating meals, snacks and cocktails throughout the day — a particularly convenient perk for families needing a sugar fix and a break from the sun.
Luma dining room
For breakfast and brunch, Luma serves dishes like Eggs Benedict and Nutella & Caramelized Banana French Toast. Come evening, the restaurant transforms into an elegant destination for Italian cuisine, with housemade pastas and items such as Seared Scallops Carbonara and Branzino Oreganata, the latter cooked in the restaurant’s charcoal-fired Josper oven. A more casual dining option is the beachside Paralía Aegean Kitchen. Begin with the Paralía Meze Experience — a selection of hummus, tzatziki, smoked eggplant salad and other Mediterranean favorites — alongside a chilled bottle of assyrtiko. Follow that with the Şiş Kebab Duo, grilled skewers of chicken and beef that arrive perfectly charred and packed with flavor. For dessert, Galaktoboureko, a crisp phyllo pastry layered with vanilla cream, roasted figs and lemon blossom syrup, will transport you straight to Greece.
Paralía terrace
Vacation equals fun cocktails for many of us, and Dune Beach Bar, conveniently situated between the adult pool and the beach, makes Watermelon Mojitos that are refreshing and irresistible. It also serves an assortment of appetizers, salads and burgers that can be ordered from your lounge chair.
If you crave your drink with a side of history, Rum Bar, located in the lobby, holds tastings led by Anthony Buddle, a charismatic rum specialist who breaks down the origins of and traditions behind the Caribbean’s favorite spirit. It’s an experience that’s equal part entertainment, education and flavor.
I love a good massage, and the resort’s 30,000-square-foot spa takes relaxation to another level.
With 16 treatment rooms, comfy chaise longues in quiet corners and a Spa Sensory Garden, it feels like a full-on wellness retreat. The Sounds of Spa, a 100-minute treatment that blends massage, meditation and therapeutic sound healing, begins at the Spa Garden, where I step into a copper gong while reciting affirmations, like “I am here,” and “I am present.” With each one, my therapist strikes the gong, sending vibrations through my body; then she leads me to a treatment room for a CBD massage complemented by singing bowls. By the time it’s over, I’m more relaxed than I have been in ages.
Spa wet room
The resort’s focus on wellness extends beyond the spa, with fitness classes, water sports and the renowned Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center. Families will appreciate the Ritz Kids club, while guided excursions to the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse offer another way to explore the island.
Perhaps the greatest luxury at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami, is knowing how easy it is to disconnect and recharge. Between the gorgeous setting, gracious service, excellent cuisine and restorative spa treatment, I leave feeling completely refreshed without venturing far from home. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best escapes are the ones hiding in your own backyard.
