A new year offers a chance to reset, refocus and return to what matters most. And there’s no better way to kick off 2026 than by committing to take better care of ourselves — mind, body and spirit.
Prioritizing our well-being isn’t indulgent; it’s what allows us to show up fully for the people and pursuits we love. After all, to quote author Eleanor Brownn, “Self-care is not selfish. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.”
With that spirit in mind, this month’s Health + Fitness Issue celebrates the people and ideas that inspire us to live with more intention and vitality, offering role models, tips for healthier living and new ways to prioritize our well-being.
We begin with the extraordinary Gabby Thomas, a powerhouse on and off the track. Our story, “Catch Her If You Can” (page 66), shares the athlete’s multifaceted career — from winning Olympic gold to stepping into the world of fashion and applying her master’s degree in public health to help make her community a better place.
Next, we pivot to a topic on many people’s minds: sleep, and the common problem of couples not getting enough of it. In “Bedroom Breakup” (page 72), we explore the growing trend of “sleep divorce” — the act of sleeping separately from your partner — in search of a good night’s rest and a stronger relationship.
“Pickleball Phenom” (page 78) reveals the inspiring journey of Anna Leigh Waters, a teen who first learned of the game from her grandfather and climbed to the top of the sport, proving its appeal reaches far beyond the retirement crowd. Stories like hers make it easy to see why so many are falling in love with the sport.
If a demanding court game feels too overwhelming, you’ll be thrilled to learn that the path to better health can be as simple — and practical — as a set of reliable chair exercises. “Sit Strong” (page 84) provides all the tools needed to achieve that New Year’s resolution to improve mobility, strengthen your core and begin your journey toward a healthier you.
In recent months, my own health journey brought a reminder of how delicate — and important — our well-being truly is. I’m grateful for all the support, encouragement and kindness I’ve received from all of you throughout the years, and I look forward to many more shared moments of good health.
To a happy and healthy year ahead,
Linda L. Behmoiras
