Welcome to our May Men’s Issue, where we take a moment to celebrate all the special men in our lives.
Whether it’s a favorite uncle, a protective older brother or the solid rock that is your spouse or best friend, we all have a guy (or two or three) we count on to make this world a better place. I am blessed to be surrounded by several great guys in my life — my father, husband, two sons, brother-in-law, cousins and close male friends.
We also are grateful for numerous male role models inspiring us to do and be better, something that is much needed, particularly during the unprecedented times we are living in today.
We start with “The Daring Dragon” (page 60), an eye-opening chat with Miami Heat basketball legend, Goran Dragić whose hard work, dedication and sacrifice have all led to the slam dunk of his success. Since his arrival to the U.S. as a 20-year-old Slovenian who struggled with a new climate and culture, the star athlete, who now calls South Florida home, has certainly come a long way.
Speaking of stars, we were fortunate enough to sit down with Tony Dokoupil, co-host of “CBS This Morning” for an engaging conversation on both his professional life in broadcast journalism as well as his role as a dad. In “Morning Star” (page 70), Dokoupil shares his views on television, family, growing up in South Florida, the challenges of working from home with a toddler and “The Basement Broadcast Center” he shares with his wife, an “MSNBC Live” anchor.
“Becoming A Better Ally” (page 66) is a candid opinion piece by South Florida writer Eric Barton exploring an important conversation of what it means to be an ally in today’s world. From sharing thoughts on working towards inclusiveness to acknowledging advantages he, as a white male, has taken for granted for a long time, Barton explores the role privilege has played in his life and shares how others in his position have the responsibility to balance the scales.
Finally, we can’t talk guys without talking golf, because we all know at least one man infatuated with the game. In their honor, we’ve dedicated an entire story to courses where they’ll find challenging tees. Check out “Above Par” (page 76), which explores four drop-dead gorgeous local golf courses that promise a memorable (and affordable) game.
To top it all off, we sprinkled in everything from Father’s Day gift ideas to great grill recipes with a little fashion advice thrown in the mix! I know you’ll find something within this issue that will resonate with you and the wonderful men in your life. Last but not least, I’d like to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandads and uncles in your life!
Best,
Linda L. Behmoiras
