Being true to oneself is a quality I value and deeply admire. In a world so focused on how others view us, it takes strength and character to stay grounded in your authentic self — even when it’s not the easiest path. I’m reminded of the quote from E.E. Cummings: “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
That spirit of authenticity is at the heart of this month’s Men’s Issue, where we celebrate the many ways men express themselves in the world — with passion, purpose and sometimes, a really great beard.
We begin with none other than Aleksander Barkov, captain of the Florida Panthers, whose leadership helped bring home the team’s first Stanley Cup win. I had a great time interviewing the Boca Raton resident (known fondly as Barky or Sasha) at the Baptist Health IcePlex just as playoff season was getting underway. Our writer, Michele Wojciechowski, did a wonderful job telling his full story in “His Best Shot” (page 60), which chronicles his path from Finland to Florida and captures the drive and determination that define him both on and off the ice. As a longtime fan and season ticketholder, I am thrilled to share his extraordinary journey and incredible achievements with you.
Courage comes in many forms, and sometimes, it starts with simply speaking up. In “The Cost Of Silence” (page 66), we explore the alarming trend of men avoiding therapy, even in their most vulnerable moments. It reminds us of the important, and often overlooked, act of asking for help.
We move on to culinary star Owen Han, who’s bringing joy to millions, one bite at a time. Our story “Sandwich Star” (page 72), explores how he blends creativity and confidence in the kitchen by drawing on his Italian roots, viral cooking videos and the many memorable food lessons he learned from his beloved nonna. Now, with a cookbook under his belt, he’s an inspiration and guiding light for anyone longing to transform their passion into something lasting and meaningful.
Of course, self-expression isn’t limited to talent or career — it can also be reflected in the mirror. I am fascinated to learn how many beard shapes, styles and grooming techniques exist. “Face It” (page 78) breaks them all down, offering a helpful guide for any guy seeking a new look.
While this is an issue dedicated to all the men in our lives, I’d be remiss not to wish all the women celebrating motherhood a Happy Mother’s Day. May your special day be filled with good health, peace, love, laughter and gratitude.
We also have something very exciting on the horizon — our long-awaited Boca Raton Centennial Issue arrives in early June. If you’ve been following along in my last few letters, you know how much this project has meant to us. Plus, I will have some special news to share. We can’t wait to celebrate Boca Raton’s 100th birthday with an issue worthy of the milestone.
Warm regards,
