A home’s fragrance is more than just a fleeting scent from a candle or a spritz of room spray — it’s a statement of style and a reflection of personality. “Unlike some of the world’s most luxurious hotels, most of us do not have the means to enlist the services of a perfumer to create signature scents for our home,” says Vicky Bellerby, founder of home fragrance concept Mixmy. But that doesn’t have to prevent us from having a signature home scent of our own. We spoke to Bellerby about creating a home scentscape so inviting, it brings vacation vibes to your space — even when you’re not away.
Marvelously Ready-Made
Never be concerned about buying off-the-rack when it comes to scent. “Like some hotels, you have the option of choosing an off-the-shelf, ready-blended home fragrance in the form of candles, reed diffusers, room sprays and fragrance oils,” Bellerby says. By consistently using a scent you love, you create a signature that feels uniquely yours — it doesn’t have to be custom to stand out. “By always scenting your home with the same fragrance, your home will become synonymous with the scent, which in turn reflects your personality and personal style,” Bellerby says. “This added dimension sets the tone for the hospitality your guests will experience and leaves a lasting impression.”
Fashionably Fragrant
You can also choose to create something custom. To find your ideal fragrance, think about the notes you truly love. “Do you prefer floral, woody, spicy or fresh aromas? Your personal preferences should guide your choice,” Bellerby says. She adds that you can combine scents “to create more complex fragrance combinations personal to you and your space.” Make sure you’re always using quality products, too — these will last longer and make your fragrance experience more consistent, she says.
Incredibly Inspired
Home scent inspiration comes from anywhere, even your own house. “Perhaps a fragrance based on wood, sweet tobacco leaf, smoky and amber notes to honor an ornate fireplace,” Bellerby suggests. “Or an intricate and enduring floral blend of heady white blooms, sweet musk and subtle woody notes to elevate a light and airy garden room.” Home scent also depends on your needs. In particular, Bellerby says, fresh, citrusy fragrances are “great at masking unpleasant odors from everyday activities such as cooking and cleaning.” You may also want to scent seasonally, she adds, choosing lighter notes for spring and summer and warmer, cozier notes for fall and winter.
