Women’s wedding jewelry tends to get the lion’s share of attention, but men’s wedding bands are just as important. Choosing one doesn’t have to be difficult, but it does deserve careful consideration. Marisa Perry knows all about it. She’s been the co-owner and president of Marisa Perry Atelier, a beloved jewelry store in New York, for 23 years. Perry shares her insights on selecting a ring that’s right for you.
Invest In Yourself
“Stop thinking of the cost and think, ‘What do I want to look down at every day for the rest of my life?’” Perry says. “It’s the only ring they’re going to wear every day, forever. It is not the time to skimp.”
That means opting for a fine metal like 18-karat gold or platinum. For those who prefer a darker metal, tantalum is a great choice — but Perry advises against rings made out of tungsten carbide and titanium because they can’t be cut off in an emergency.
“Just like the girls should have a nice, beautiful ring, I think men should also have a nice, juicy band,” Perry says. “Men, don’t neglect yourselves.”
Try It On
Perry recommends trying on multiple styles in-store and working with a salesperson for guidance. Explore different widths, shapes and finishes — she favors a thicker band. Matte or brushed finishes, stripes, stones and engravings can add personality. She’s even had clients request meteorite in their rings to shake things up. However, she cautions against wood because it doesn’t last as well as metals do. And rubber rings? “Never,” Perry says. Unless your ring could get damaged easily, metal is the way to go.
Think Ahead
“That wedding band is going out with us all,” Perry quips. “That wedding band will become a family heirloom that their son or grandson might wear.”
Once it’s on your finger, don’t forget upkeep. “It would be nice if the man wanted to come in every five years and get his ring buffed and polished, so it looked brand new again,” Perry says. “It’s always good to bring your ring in for a checkup every few years.”
