A new year often means a new fitness routine, and the right fabrics can make all the difference. Breathable, moisture-wicking materials help you move comfortably and stay cool during tough workouts. Here are some of our favorites to keep your routine high-performing — and stylish.
Polyester
From tank tops to shorts, polyester is great for exercise because it holds its shape, pulls moisture away from the body, stretches and doesn’t wrinkle. Plus, it’s one of the more affordable synthetic fibers and comes in a variety of colors. Just keep in mind that polyester can hold on to bacteria and odor, so regular washing will help keep your workout gear fresh.
Nylon
Even more than polyester, nylon is known for its strength and flexibility. That’s why it’s a key fabric in garments like sports bras and leggings. It’s also great for compression, which helps with circulation. What’s more, nylon is water-resistant and is noted for its sleek look. Breathability depends on the tightness of each weave, so choose the construction that best matches your activity.
Elastane
Also known as Spandex, elastane has a defining feature: incredible stretch, allowing the fibers to expand significantly without losing their shape. Activities that call for this material require a lot of movement, whether yoga or dance, weightlifting or running. Elastane works best in blends with other performance fabrics, improving ventilation and overall comfort. To maintain that signature stretch, hang elastane pieces to dry after washing, since the heat from the dryer can reduce its elasticity over time.
… And Sometimes Cotton
But only sometimes. While cotton is soft, naturally breathable, helps keep odors at bay and staves off bacteria, it’s not moisture-wicking and can stay wet with sweat. As the only natural fabric listed here, cotton offers breathability that synthetics can’t always match. If you’re working out and wearing cotton, make sure it’s a lower-impact activity — like going for a walk — so you can be as comfortable as possible.
