Summer style in South Florida can be a challenge as we try to stay cool and sophisticated at the same time.
Adding a country club dress code to that equation, even if it’s casual, can be downright mystifying. We spoke to Patrick Kenger, founder of Pivot Image Consulting, a company based in Scottsdale, Ariz., working specifically with men to help them improve their style. Here are some of his tips for the best country club attire for men who want to stay smart, sporty and stylish this season.
Remember The Venue
First and foremost, make sure you’re adhering to your country club’s dress code, after all, it’s a sign of respect. Good rule of thumb: it’s better to (somewhat) overdress than underdress. “Always stay just slightly above the crowd for an elevated appearance without looking like you’re trying too hard,” Kenger says. “If the majority of men are wearing a tee, you wear a polo. If most guys are going with a polo, wear a linen, button-down shirt.”
Ditch Your Gym Gear
“A lot of men have a tendency to wear athletic clothing such as gym shorts or sneakers even when they have nothing athletic planned,” Kenger says. “Make sure to wear nicer casual shoes like a pair of drivers or boat shoes and only break out the gym sneakers when they’re needed.” Bring your gym bag with athletic gear in it if you need to, but always change out of it after you’re done with the sporting activity.
Stay Cool
Summer in South Florida calls for chic attire that will beat the heat. Choose lighter fabrics and colors to keep your look smart when the sun is high. “A lot of guys default to tees and shorts when things start to heat up,” Kenger says. “Instead, opt for lightweight materials and moisture-wicking fabrics in polos and even long-sleeved button-downs.” Choose softer colors. Bright colors should always be avoided, but white, cream and pastel hues are your friends.
Go Classic
Country club classics include polo shirts (with moisture-wicking if you’re golfing), cotton shorts, chinos, boat shoes and drivers for those steamy summer months. Another important factor: keep your look uncomplicated. “No loud patterns, logos or colors,” Kenger says. “Keeping things simple will ensure you’re able to pair all your items together seamlessly.” A final smart tip for staying classic is to make sure your clothes fit correctly. If you need to, get your pieces tailored to look as sharp as possible.
