Lace, fringe, feathers and knits are fresh style additions this season, and they can be just as much fun to wear as they are to look at. When it comes to texture, however, there’s a right way to make it work while retaining your own sense of joy and personality. We spoke to personal stylist Lamara Chenei to get a feel for the best ways to wear these pieces.
Balance Is Key
According to Chenei, the most important part of textured dressing is balance. “If you’re wearing a texture, your texture becomes your statement,” she says, adding that you should then build around that garment with more simplistic pieces. With a feather top, for example, skip feathers on the bottom. Instead, opt for a vibrant-colored bottom in a cleaner cut or add a striking accessory. “There’s no harm in adding a bolder necklace or a bolder earring to that look,” Chenei explains. “Now you’re creating some distance between your statement pieces, and it still can allow for the outfit to have the balance that we’re looking for.”
Know When To Stop
A big mistake Chenei sees when people attempt to follow this trend is “texture overload.” An easy way to approach the look is by considering fabric weight. Lightweight materials like silk and linen can often be paired together without overwhelming the eye. Heavier elements — fringe, feathers and chunky knits — carry more visual presence. “They are a little more dominating,” Chenei says, noting that combining bold textures can be overbearing when combined. Let one statement fabric lead and keep the rest of the outfit more restrained.
Remember To Play
All the top textures this season have a fanciful freedom to them, so Chenei advises having fun when trying something new. She also reminds people that the clothes you choose should feel comfortable, express your personality and be appropriate for wherever you’re going. When you’re shopping, always try on the pieces you’re curious about. “It’s all about finding what texture works for you, and then building a wearable and stylish wardrobe around it,” she says. “So don’t be afraid to try just because it may feel intimidating. Once you find [them], you’re going to find that you really love implementing these pieces into your wardrobe.”
