Now that we have fallen back an hour for Daylight Saving Time, my commute home from work typically includes a front-row seat to a sensational sunset. It’s a glorious event not at all diminished by the harried drivers or crazy traffic that plagues the highway at that time. Clouds swirl together in cotton candy hues of flamingo pink and baby blue, streaked by bold accents of tangerine and crimson.
Every time I witness it, I am in awe.
Every worry, stress or obligation that may have busied my mind beforehand escapes and I’m left feeling joyous and fortunate to be alive.
I know I am not alone in this — we all tend to get mired in the minutiae of life. Don’t fault yourself, it’s easy enough to do. While many of these commitments are a necessary part of adulting, it’s wonderful to be handed reminders of the beauty that surrounds us as well.
The holiday season is a perfect time to take stock of the positives that we may take for granted. 2021 feels extra loaded with reason to celebrate. While we’re not completely devoid of the surreal life changes the pandemic has forced upon us, for many, we’re finally seeing a bit of light.
Whether you are lighting the menorah, racing towards presents under the tree or marking the last month of the year in your own festive way, December serves as the ideal opportunity to take stock of things that may have fallen through the cracks. It may be as simple as enjoying that sunset or looking up at the night sky, going on a walk with an old friend or playing catch with the dog — even if he never manages to grab the ball!
Rejoice, recount, remember — take pause and make room for the good stuff in life, it’s usually quietly and faithfully waiting for you to notice, just like an exceptional Florida sunset sky.
