In an age where current events often divide us, there’s something truly uplifting about the timeless wisdom of Anne Frank, a young girl who found a universal truth even in the confines of her hiding place when she astutely observed, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” Her ever-relevant insight springs to mind as we explore this issue’s theme of Giving.
I find that the selfless, and often overlooked, act of helping others can be a transformative force for good, which is why I’m beyond excited to share the wonderful, inspiring stories celebrating just that.
I can’t think of a better place to begin than with our cover story “Changing People’s Lives” (page 64), where we highlight the important work “48 Hours” and “CBS News” correspondent Erin Moriarty is doing, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Learning about her trailblazing story on Kevin Cooper left me with a newfound sense of gratitude and admiration for the valuable work she continues to do.
Katee Sackhoff is our other celebrity sharing her rich professional and personal journey with us. In our piece “Katee’s Causes” (page 76), we explore her journey to fame and delve into how the invaluable life lessons imparted by her parents shaped her perspective on altruism, inspiring her to initiate, not one, but two significant causes aimed at making the world a better place.
For those of us concerned about the younger generation’s attachment to social media (guilty as charged!) prepare for an eye-opening read. Our enlightening feature “From Hashtag To Humanitarianism” (page 70) explores the modern approach to giving that speaks directly to our youth. It transcends the conventional bake sale, and you’ll be intrigued to discover why.
Our piece, “Great Givers” (page 82) honors notable American philanthropists, present and past, who have allocated their substantial wealth for the betterment of others and continue to inspire us all with their enduring legacy of generosity.
Lastly, I’m thrilled to announce our fantastic Charity Galas & Luncheons guide (page 144) in this important issue. I hope you will enjoy reading our comprehensive list of all the wonderful opportunities to help others in our area — and be inspired to pay it forward.
Before signing off, I want to wish each and every one of you a Happy Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorite holidays, not just because of the irresistible feast, but for its core message of love and gratitude — the same message I hope resonates with you as you turn the pages of this special issue. I hope you are enjoying time with family — blood or chosen — enjoying good health, lots of laughter and serenity, all of which are needed more than ever today.
In light of the recent horrific events in Israel, my heart goes out to those affected. May peace and unity prevail in these trying times.
With Gratitude Always,
Linda L. Behmoiras
