Dick Lowenthal’s Big Band Featuring Lisanne Lyons: Royalty of Jazz Salutes The Holidays
The Royalty of Jazz-Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and the King of Swing, Benny Goodman, bring in the Holiday Season with selections, both old and new. In addition, there will be favorite festive music from the big bands of Stan Kenton and Glenn Miller. The band consists of many of the finest jazz musicians in the tri-county area, all of whom are veterans of such bands as Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and various Broadway shows.
PERFORMER BIOS:
Dick Lowenthal
Retired Professor Emeritus Richard Lowenthal recently retired after teaching Jazz for over 50 years. He founded and chaired the Jazz Program at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music and conducted the award-winning Jazz Orchestra. He also started the Jazz Program at New Jersey City University. As a conductor and performer, he has appeared with Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, and Cher, among others. While conducting the Special Unit of the Glenn Miller Orchestra for 10 years, they appeared in concerts throughout the world, the Tony Awards, and various Presidential receptions.
Finally, Dick is on the Board of Directors and two-time donor to the Band of Angels and has been teaching his successful Jazz and Java Adult Courses for the past four years.
Lisanne Lyons
Lisanne Lyons received her Bachelors, Masters, and Doctor of Music from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. As a student, she received two Down Beat awards for Best Jazz vocalist, Best Jazz Arrangement, and one for directing Best Small Jazz Vocal Group. She is currently a Professor at FIU and Director of the Jazz vocal Program, and her vocal groups and students have won national and international performance awards.
Some of the groups Dr Lyons has performed with include the Orchestras of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, and the Palm Beach Pops. She has performed with Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Jon Hendricks, Bucky Pizzarelli, Gary Burton and Brian Lynch.
