Two fishermen cast their net upon the sea, as a woman’s face emerges from the waves — an image capturing the love, friendship, and betrayal at the heart of Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers.
In a love triangle with a high priestess, no one can win. Nadir and Zurga have loved and foresworn Leïla in order to maintain their friendship. Meanwhile, Leïla’s vow of chastity to serve the village creates a barrier to her future happiness. Crossing that barrier could end friendships and quite possibly lives. Yet Nadir and Leïla feel the magnetic pull of true love.
