Cotoletta alla Milanese is a classic Milan dish. It’s also the focus of the menu at one of Coconut Grove’s newest Italian restaurants — Cotoletta.
On the corner of Commodore Street and Grand Avenue, Cotoletta offers diners a prix fixe menu for two priced at $80. The main dish on the menu is, you guessed it, Cotoletta alla Milanese, or veal Milanese.
The meal begins with a seasonal antipasto followed by the main course served with a choice of two sides. Options include spaghetti al pomodoro e basilico, house fries or arugula, Heritage tomato and Parmigiano Reggiano salad.
For an additional charge, diners can add one of the following desserts: flourless chocolate cake, cheesecake with raspberry coulis or the Vanilla Affogato Supreme, a dessert of ice cream with hot espresso poured over it.
The restaurant is the creation of 84 Magic Hospitality — Ignacio López-Mancisidor, Mattia Cicognani and third-generation restaurateur Andrea Fraquelli. It was Fraquelli’s grandfather, Lorenzo, who was the inspiration for the restaurant’s concept. In the 1950s he moved to London from Italy and eventually opened his restaurant chain.
English diners were not accustomed to eating multicourse meals, so his solution was to serve a small portion of pasta on the same plate as the cotoletta. This dish became the cornerstone of his success.
“We’ve all had Cotoletta alla Milanese before, but rarely in the way the Milanese intended,” Fraquelli says. “It’s been imitated and altered over the years, but here, we’re focused on doing justice to this dish — bringing it back to its roots.”
Cotoletta is located at 3206 Grand Ave., in Miami. For more information, visit cotolettamiami.com.
