Wynwood’s Uchi restaurant has given birth to Uchiko. The name, which translates to “child of Uchi” in Japanese, opened in March in Miami Beach’s Sunset Harbour neighborhood.
The 5,380-square-foot restaurant is located in Eighteen Sunset, a new mixed-use retail and office property, features a private 12-seat dining room with sliding drapes and a carved stone fireplace.
The menu, designed by James Beard Award-winning Chef Tyson Cole, offers diners several Uchi favorites, such as Sake Crudo made with salmon, coconut, green chili and papaya, as well as nigiri/sashimi specials. However, its main focus is blending smoke and char with seafood, vegetables and steak prepared over an open flame — a key distinction between the two concepts.
Chef de Cuisine Jacob Yoder comes to the restaurant from Uchiko Austin, where he served as executive sous chef.
Standouts include lobster with roasted mushrooms and umeboshi butter, 4x Seared NY Strip Wagyu with charred snow pea leaves and Japanese sweet potato complemented by brown butter, nori vinaigrette and crème fraîche.
There’s also a full bar with Japanese whisky, sake, wine and craft cocktails.
Wrap up your meal with Milk and Cereal (fried milk, chocolate mousse and toasted milk ice cream) or Pineapple Upside Down, made with black garlic, brown butter and rum ice cream.
Uchiko is located at 1759 Purdy Ave. in Miami Beach. For more information, visit uchiko.uchirestaurants.com.
