Imbibers flock to The Piano Bar at The Betsy Hotel for its classy feel, prime South Beach address and one-of-a-kind drinks created by bartender Jorge Moreno. The Puerto Rican native is a seasoned pro behind the bar, whether sticking to a classic cocktail or going off-script to create his own concoction. We met up with him to get the inside scoop.
Q&A
What do you love most about bartending?
The opportunity to connect with so many different people every day is the best part of my job. Each guest brings something new to the table. Also, I enjoy seeing their reactions when they taste the cocktails I’ve made. It’s rewarding to know that not only does the drink taste great, but it also brings them happiness.
What is your favorite quote?
“Don’t wait for tomorrow for what you can do today.”
I’m not sure who said it, but it’s one that’s stuck with me. It speaks to me because I believe in seizing the moment. The present moment is the only one we have, and if we wait for the “perfect” moment, we might miss out on so much.
You can design your own cocktail napkin. What would it say?
“Enjoy life!” It’s simple but powerful. We forget to pause and savor the moment in the hustle of everyday life. It’s a great reminder to slow down and enjoy it all.
What cocktail do you think represents your personality?
A cucumber-infused martini. It’s refreshing and stands out from the usual options — just like me! I like to think of myself as someone who brings a fresh perspective and likes to mix things up, whether it’s behind the bar or in life.
Bar trend you’d wish would fizzle out?
Baileys in espresso martinis! Let’s keep it simple and true to the original recipe.
Best piece of advice you ever received?
“Save your money!” It’s not the most glamorous advice, but it’s important. In bartending, it’s easy to get caught up in the fast-paced lifestyle and spend impulsively, but being mindful about saving has made a big difference.
Best bar snack?
The Betsy Hotel’s signature popcorn. It’s the perfect bar snack — easy to munch on, always a crowd favorite and absolutely addictive. Exactly what you want in a bar snack!
What’s one drink everyone should know about?
The Old Fashioned. It’s a cocktail that’s been around for ages — and for good reason. It’s simple, made with few ingredients, yet still impresses every time. It’s also the foundation of many other drinks. It’s just a classic that will never go out of style.
There are so many great bars in South Florida — what makes The Betsy Hotel stand out from the rest?
The Betsy Hotel stands out because it’s a true escape from the chaos of Miami. It has a classic, timeless vibe and offers a refreshing change in a city where trends come and go. We’re also home to Miami Beach’s longest-running live music series, featuring award-winning musicians seven days a week, with nine performances each week — all open to the public. This adds a special touch for guests. We’ve created a relaxed, welcoming space where people can feel at home, sip on delicious drinks and enjoy incredible live music, away from the typical tourist spots.
Who, living or not, would you want to make a drink for? (Bonus question: What drink would you prepare?)
I’d love to make a drink for any United States president. The chance to chat with someone who’s had such a significant impact on history, while sharing a drink, would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As for the drink, I’d go for a classic cocktail like an Old Fashioned. And of course, I’d have to make the Jorgito, which is my namesake [gin-based] cocktail at The Piano Bar!
