After nearly three decades behind the bar, Christian Delpech has become a legend in the cocktail world.
The Argentine bartender has earned 19 world championships in flair bartending, a high-energy performance that involves flipping, spinning and juggling bottles as part of the drink-making performance. (Think Tom Cruise in “Cocktail.”) Today, he’s the driving force behind Presidente Bar, which his sophisticated drinks, welcoming vibe and hand-picked team have made one of Miami’s most talked-about spots. We caught up with Delpech for a spirited one-on-one.
Q&A
What inspired the concept behind Presidente Bar, and what makes it different from other cocktail bars in Miami?
Presidente Bar in Miami is not just another cocktail venue; it’s a luxury hospitality experience that welcomes everyone. What sets it apart is a unique blend of culturally diverse food offerings, meticulously crafted cocktails and truly outstanding hospitality. Each element is designed to deliver a high-end yet inclusive atmosphere where guests can feel both pampered and at home.
Un Beso Más is your featured cocktail. What’s the story behind the name — and what should we expect in that first sip?
The name came from a conversation I had with [my co-founder] Seba García while curating the menu. I told him about an amazing cocktail that, once finished, makes you wish for just one more sip. He replied, “Es como que te quedas con ganas de darle un beso más al vaso,” which translates to, “It’s like you want to give the glass one more kiss.” I said, “Yes, that’s it — Un Beso Más.”
You’ve traveled the world bartending. What culture outside of Miami has had the biggest influence on your cocktail style?
I would say my cocktail style is classic and international, but the Italian approach has influenced me the most.
You’ve trained teams around the world. What’s one lesson every bartender should carry with them, no matter where they work?
In everything you do, be hospitable and welcoming. Lead with empathy, carry yourself with confidence and always remain humble.
You’ve seen your fair share of wild drink requests. What’s the most unforgettable order you’ve ever gotten?
There are many, but one I remember was in Las Vegas: a shot of tequila with Tabasco. The guest sniffed the salt, squeezed lime juice into their eye, and drank the shot.
Is there one classic cocktail you think deserves more love?
Not just one — cocktails made with Cognac or brandy definitely deserve more love.
If you could make a drink for anyone in the world, living or dead, who would it be — and what would you serve them?
It would be for my dad (RIP), and I would make him a Boulevardier.
