A visit to Japan has always been on my bucket list, not only because of its extraordinary history and stunning landscapes but also because of its cuisine. And while I still hope to one day travel to the Land of the Rising Sun, enjoying dinner at the newly opened Japón in Miami Beach offers a piece of the experience, both in flavor and ambiance.
Tucked inside the luxurious Setai Miami Beach hotel (home to acclaimed eateries Jaya and Ocean Grill), Japón aims to transport diners to Japan the minute they step inside. Take the stunning mosaic crane welcoming guests — a revered cultural icon symbolizing happiness and good fortune. This theme carries through the restaurant, with custom wallpaper of the bird midflight adorning the bar and subtle crane motifs woven into the fabrics throughout. Woodblock paintings from the 1800s further enhance the space, while the dining room’s blend of rich blue, pink and gold hues creates an air of elegance.
For those craving the ultimate intimate experience, there is The Kyoto Room, a private space seating 14 that comes with its own bar. In The Setai’s iconic courtyard, a charming pagoda offers al fresco dining complete with front-row views of nightly performances that celebrate Japan’s rich cultural tapestry.
Matching the caliber of the setting, the food is exquisite, showcasing the rich traditions and artistry of Japanese cuisine. Under the leadership of Executive Chef Vijayudu Veena and Executive Sous-Chef Iván Monzón, dishes reflect a careful balance of flavors, textures and aesthetics found in Japan. I’d recommend visiting with a large group to justify ordering multiple dishes. Appetizers like Tuna Crispy Rice (Sushi Rice, Tuna, Spicy Mayo, Scallion), Miso Black Cod Butter Lettuce (Miso Glaze, Ginger, Bibb Lettuce Cups, Kataifi) and Tuna Pizza (Thinly Sliced Tuna, Creamy Ponzu, Red Onion, Truffle Oil) expertly combine flavors and textures for memorable bites. The Baby Spinach salad — a refreshing blend of Baby Spinach, Avocado and Yuzu Miso Dressing — is bright and refreshing, while the Hamachi Serrano, a delicate combination of Hamachi Sashimi, Yuzu Shoyu, Serrano and Cilantro, practically melts in your mouth. There’s a hearty Tempura and Robata menu offering everything from Chilean Sea Bass Tempura with Creamy Wasabi Sauce to Filet Mignon Skewers with Yakitori, Wasabi Salsa and Pickles to King Crab Tempura with Orange Ichimi Miso Butter. In other words, something for everyone. Those opting out of meat or seafood can enjoy the Vegetables & Tofu Tempura.
You may be slowing down by now, but thankfully the mood here is not rushed, allowing diners to relax and savor the moment.
Perhaps this would be an opportune time to order a cocktail. The Fuji Blossom, made with Fuji apple-infused ALB vodka, Joto Yuzu sake, fresh citrus and egg whites, the Samurai In Jalisco (shishito and orange peel infused Mijenta Blanco, Aperol and grapefruit) or the Suntory Sour, a mixture of Toki Whiskey, Midori melon, Choya plum, citrus, saline and egg whites are all winning choices. I am a creature of habit, so I requested my go-to favorite, an Old Fashioned. It was absolutely divine. There’s a generous wine and sake list that comes with detailed flavor notes for those needing guidance.
For heartier fare, signature dishes include the Truffle Hotpot, an umami-forward delight made with Sushi Rice, Wild Mushroom, Shaved Truffle, Kimchee Miso and a Poached Egg. Chilean Seabass with Charred Tomato Miso, Red Onion and Lime pairs buttery fish with a tangy, slightly smoky sauce, while Lamb Chops with Kimchee Miso, Pickled Cucumber and Shishito Pepper is a favorite among guests.
This is a Japanese restaurant, after all, so be sure to find room for sushi in your order. From a simple California roll (made with Blue Crab instead of imitation crab), Tempura Fish roll (Salmon, Hamachi, Tuna, Avocado, Scallion Tobiko, Spicy Mayo) to Setai Wagyu (Asparagus, Red Onion, Kizami Wasabi, Tare Sauce), each is a hit in its own right. Sashimi and sushi selections are surefire ways to experience the uncompromising excellence in the fish at Japón.
Named the world’s favorite travel destination by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler in 2024, Japan continues to captivate its guests, and for good reason. For those eager to experience its exceptional culinary traditions closer to home, this South Florida newcomer delivers.
