Long gone are the days when it was a challenge to find quality dining in Boca Raton. Thankfully, the city has been steadily growing its repertoire, with more arriving every day. Still, one classic that has withstood the test of time — and carries the banner of one of Boca Raton’s most beloved restaurants — is New York Prime.
Beyond a traditional steakhouse, New York Prime embodies the spirit of Boca: sophisticated, luxurious and stylish. The main dining room is airy and bright, with high vaulted ceilings and a series of tall, arched windows wrapped in warm wood that bathe the room in South Florida light. Tables bearing crisp white tablecloths and dark wood chairs evoke an old-school elegance without ever feeling pretentious. A separate space in the back provides the ideal ambiance for larger groups.
Upon entry, a backlit bar framed in rich wood serves as a welcome reminder of the bygone era New York Prime diners enjoy. Guests can sip signature cocktails like the “Coldest In Town” Dirty Martini and a Palm Beach Sling or zero-proof options like the Burnt Orange Spritz and Cucumber Fizz while live music performs near the bar. For wine lovers, an expansive built-in wine rack that stretches across the room speaks to its serious approach to its wine program.
It’s no surprise New York Prime is packed on any given night. Serving tender, high-end cuts of meat such as filet, ribeye and tomahawk, the restaurant is celebrated for using USDA grade prime (the highest quality designation, representing only the top 3% of beef in the United States) for every cut.
Diners ordering aged steaks are served cuts aged a minimum of four weeks, ensuring maximum flavor. And when it comes to filet mignon, New York Prime uses barrel cuts only, taken from the tenderloin’s center. Lamb chops are high-grade, 10-oz. loin cuts from the Midwest, while the veal chop, at 16 oz., is center-cut only.
Of course, it’s not only the quality of the meat but how it is cooked. Each steak arrives with a perfect sear thanks to the restaurant’s 1,700° Southbend™ broilers, which ensure the perfect exterior caramelization while maintaining a juicy and flavorful interior.
Seafood also gets the prime treatment, with New York Prime serving colossal shrimp that are plump and tender. On my visit, I sampled the restaurant’s legendary appetizer simply called, Baked Shrimp. Prepared with garlic butter, parmesan and breadcrumbs, it did not disappoint. Crab Cake is another standout starter. Made with premium jumbo lump crab, it underscores the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to excellence. For the main course, the Sea Bass — simply pan-roasted with garlic — showcases the buttery flavor of the fish, while the Scottish Salmon is topped with sautéed portobello mushrooms for a hearty, earthy touch that complements the richness of the fish.
Sides are held to the same high standards. In true steakhouse fashion, options abound, from Creamed Spinach and a Baked Potato (each weighing one pound and sourced from Idaho) to Cheese Mashed Potatoes that have a cult following all of their own. My server, Danielle, who was friendly, attentive and extremely knowledgeable, suggested the Charred Brussels Sprouts and Hash Browns/Lyonnaise, and I couldn’t have been more pleased. That is, until the table next to mine ordered the Onion Rings and I watched with envy as a gigantic tower of stacked, crisy rings was placed on their table. I made a mental note to return for those.
When it comes to desserts, New York Prime knows how to end with a bang. My table went for the signature Butter Cake, an extra-large portion of velvety cake served warm with ice cream. It is supposed to be for two to four people, but it’s so delicious that you may find yourself leaving a notable dent on your own. Other contenders include the Gigantic Chocolate Cake (the menu claims it “easily serves four or more”) or the White Chocolate Banana Cream Pie.
With its classic steakhouse charm, exceptional attention to detail and commitment to top-tier ingredients, New York Prime delivers a dining experience that is both timeless and elevated. It’s no wonder this iconic restaurant has been a local favorite for more than two decades — and shows no signs of slowing down.
