The sensational musical comedy revival, “Funny Girl,” is coming to Broward Center for the Performing Arts from Tuesday, Nov. 14 through Sunday, Nov. 26.
Called “vivacious and delightfully glitzy” by Vogue, this Broadway favorite tells the story of Fanny Brice, played by rising South Florida star Katerina McCrimmon, and her path to becoming a celebrated performer.
“As a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on stage, everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened – she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway,” notes a press release.
The cast, starring McCrimmon as Fanny Brice, Stephen Mark Lukas, Grammy Award-winner Melissa Manchester and Izaiah Montaque Harris, dazzles spectators with the songs “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star” and “People.”
Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, iconic scores by Tony, Grammy and Academy award winner Jule Styne and lyrics by Tony Award nominee and Grammy Award winner Bob Merrill, it is based on the original book by American screenwriter and playwright Isobel Lennart, known for writing this Broadway musical and other scripts for Hollywood films.
“Fans have adored Melissa throughout her 50-year musical career, and Katerina is a star in the making who embodies the rising stardom of Fanny,” says Mayer. “We could not be more thrilled to have this dynamic and talented duo lead the ‘Funny Girl’ tour.”
