The 7th Annual Faena Jazz Series continues its stellar six-month run with a standout performance by rising Mexican singer Lucía, who will take the stage at the Faena Theater on tonight at 8 p.m. Curated by Grammy-nominated producer Rachel Faro, the series showcases jazz’s brightest stars and most prominent new voices.
Hailing from Veracruz, Mexico, the bilingual singer is gaining attention for her distinctive sound, blending jazz, pop and traditional Mexican influences. For this special performance, Lucía will be joined onstage by Grammy Award-winner pianist and Dean of the Frost School of Music, Shelly Berg. The evening will be hosted by fellow Veracruz native, Telemundo personality and recording artist Cynthia Bague.
Lucía’s musical journey began at the age of 2, performing alongside her parents in their legendary ensemble, Son de Madera. She later earned a degree in jazz studies from the University of Veracruz and went on to collaborate with top Mexican artists such as Natalia LaFourcade, La Santa Cecilia and Quetzal. Her voice has grace some of the world’s most iconic stages, including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, UCLA’s Royce Hall, the Smithsonian, the Vancouver Folk Festival and the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza in Mexico City.
In 2022, Lucía made history as the first Latina artist to win the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Jazz Competition (aka SASSY Awards). Now 23, she’s embarking on a solo career with the release of her debut single, “What A Difference A Day Makes/Cuando Vuelvo A Tu Lado,” and is set to launch her first full-length album, “Escape,” on May 16.
