Reframing Narratives
ArtServe’s New Exhibition Explores The Complexities Of Black Experience In The Arts
ArtServe, the award-winning, Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit dedicated to transforming the arts into a dynamic hub for experimental artists, has announced the opening of its first 2025 exhibition: “Burnout and Black Artists: Emotional Sustainability in the Arts.”
The compelling exhibition invites visitors to explore the emotional and physical toll placed on Black artists, whose work often grapples with themes of trauma and pain. It also raises questions about how this emotional labor affects their well-being and challenges the art world to adopt a more holistic view of the Black experience.
“At ArtServe, we believe art is a powerful tool for exploring the important issues that shape our world,” says Jason Hughes, ArtServe CEO. “It’s a space where artists can share their voices and experiences and where we can all learn from one another. We’re excited to start the year with ‘Burnout and Black Artists,’ a thought-provoking exhibit that dives deep into the emotional challenges Black artists face, and we look forward to the conversation it will inspire.”
One of the striking pieces featured in the exhibition is “I Am Refreshed” by artist Holly Forbes. According to the artist’s website, the painting speaks to the beauty of rejuvenation and inner peace. Its vibrant colors and harmonious design evoke a sense of calm, reminding viewers of the power of self-care and new beginnings.
Now in its 35th year, ArtServe has earned multiple awards for innovation in the arts. Through its impactful programs, the nonprofit has contributed significantly to the region’s economy, helping more than 2,000 artists sell their work, build businesses and engage with the community each year.
