It’s time to break out the fascinators; the Kentucky Derby returns to the track May 2. For South Florida, this means a slew of local events and watch parties paired with the obligatory mint juleps.
At Palm Beach Kennel Club, Kentucky Derby Day offers a chance to “watch, wager and win on the 152nd Run for the Roses.” Along with live race viewing, guests can enjoy live music, trackside barbecue and, of course, the Derby’s signature cocktail. Be sure to bring your boldest headwear, as there will also be a Kentucky Derby Hat Contest. Early betting begins at noon on Friday, May 1, and continues starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2.
Palm Beach Kennel Club is located at 1111 N. Congress Ave., West Palm Beach. For more information, visit pbkennelclub.com.
At Carousel Club at Gulfstream Park, enjoy a live broadcast of the race while sipping on a complimentary mint julep (or beer or wine). The watch party will feature a DJ, yard games and photo opportunities, and admission includes a commemorative pin. Official Derby glasses will also be available for purchase, along with classic barbecue bites.
Gulfstream Park is located at 901 S. Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach. For more information, visit gulfstreampark.com.
The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and Steve Savor are hosting a party at Savor Cinema, with the race projected on the theater’s 30-foot high-definition screen. Along with live music and a barbecue buffet, tickets include an open bar, with mint juleps on offer. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative Derby hats, bonnets and outfits. Guests can also participate in a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds benefiting the Broward County Film Society.
Savor Cinema is located at 503 S.E. 6th St., Fort Lauderdale. For more information, visit fliff.com.
For its second annual Kentucky Derby Party, Woodfield Country Club offers food and mint juleps, as well as a cigar-rolling experience. Guests also have the chance to go home with silent auction items or 50/50 raffle winnings. All proceeds benefit Covered South Florida, a nonprofit committed to ending diaper need in the community, as well as providing period products and other essential hygiene items.
