What happens when a not-so-perfect Italian Catholic mob family from Brooklyn tries to fit in as a near-perfect Jewish family in Boca Raton? South Florida talents Sharon Pfeiffer of Boca Raton and Deni B. Sher of Weston bring this hilarious premise to life with the premiere of “From Brooklyn to Boca.” The two-act comedy, loosely based on Pfeiffer’s own experiences, is scheduled to debut at The Studio of Mizner Park’s 300-seat theater from Jan. 9-19.
Directed by Sharee Cravero Pemberton of Pompano Beach, the play offers a fresh, female-driven spin on the mob genre while tackling themes of family, relationships, acceptance and love. Instead of a gritty mafia drama, it serves as a side-splitting performance of heartfelt memories — a must-see for anyone looking for a good laugh.
“‘From Brooklyn to Boca’ follows a mob family trying very hard to blend into the Jewish community of Boca Raton after entering Witness Protection [a program that relocates and provides new identities to individuals in danger for cooperating with law enforcement],” states a press release. “Full of heart and hilarious culture clashes, audiences will revel in the absurdity as Regina, a Catholic Brooklynite, tries to adapt to her new life, while hilarity ensues when the family’s ‘mob mentality’ gets them in trouble.”
“From Brooklyn to Boca” is also scheduled to run at Pompano Beach Cultural Arts Center this summer, with additional tour dates currently in the works.
