Break out the bell-bottoms and brush up on your disco moves: The 5.4 Funky Run returns to Vista View Park in Davie on Aug. 16, bringing a healthy dose of 1970s style to South Florida.
Now in its sixth year, this groovy race runs on a 5.4-mile course made up of two 2.7-mile loops that wind around and over the park’s hills. The mileage itself is a nod to the famed Studio 54 nightclub in New York City. Participants who prefer a shorter distance can opt for the single-loop, 2.7-mile “Not Quite As Funky Run.”
Runners who are less focused on their finishing times can boogie to classics disco hits like “Shake Your Groove Thing,” “Funkytown” and “The Hustle” before the party continues at the finish line.
Racers and supporters alike can flaunt their best ’70s get-ups at the Studio 54–inspired costume contest. Bell-bottoms, sequins and retro accessories are encouraged, though running in costume is optional. Awards will be presented for the best individual men’s and women’s outfits, along with special recognition for those who bring the most energy to the dance floor.
The park opens at 6 a.m., with the race starting at 7 a.m. Overall and age-group awards will be presented for both distances, with age groups ranging from 9-and-under through 90-and-up.
