Teaching kids about science and innovation doesn’t have to be an uphill battle anymore, thanks to a new permanent exhibit at Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Opened since Aug. 4, young scientists (ages 0-6) and their families are welcome to explore the wonders of Florida ecosystems at the museum’s “Discovery Spot” exhibition.
“The Discovery Spot will allow our community’s youngest learners to take their very first steps in science,” says Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS, in a press release. “This exhibit responds to our community’s need for quality, immersive education opportunities for families with young children to grow together in a fun environment.”
From hands-on interactive activities to role-playing opportunities, kids will learn new science concepts while exploring, moving, researching and manipulating environments as they develop and practice cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills.
According to a press release, children can role-play as airplane pilots, scientists on research vessels, veterinarians in the exhibit’s Field Hospital, citrus processors in the Juicing Factory and animal trackers in the Everglades area. What’s more, by combining arts and science, children can bring the state’s native fish and sharks to life by digitally painting a species and then releasing it into the digital ocean. “The Discovery Spot allows for playful exploration of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) experiences that lead to lifelong learning,” states the museum’s website.
The exhibit, presented by JM Family Enterprises, has time-slot tickets Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon, noon-2 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. and Sundays from noon-2 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.
