There’s High Tea, English Afternoon Tea — and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens’ special tea ceremony.
The Delray Beach venue is sharing the idea and culture behind it during its Tea Ceremony Class.
“Expand upon your knowledge of Japanese tea ceremony in this hands-on class. Perform traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with its ever-evolving seasonal subtleties, in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House under the guidance of instructor Yoshiko Hardick,” the museum’s website explains. “Sado teaches the basics of the tea ceremony necessary in understanding its aesthetics, and to fully enjoy the tea ceremony itself. Participants familiarize themselves with how to participate as a guest, how to make a bowl of tea, and serve it.”
Hardick, who was born in Japan, spent more than 20 years studying under tea masters Atsuko Lefcourte and Chieko Mihori and is a certified instructor of the Omotesenke School of Tea in Kyoto, Japan.
The two-session classes are held several times a year, including Sept. 14 and 28 and Sept. 11 and 18.
Classes take place in the Seishin-an Tea House. Participants must be able to sit in a seiza position (with knees bent and folded beneath the thighs) for 15-30 minutes.
