Compson Associates is a company that truly values family. Founded in 1946, it is a legacy, full-service, family-run development business. The company has surpassed the $3 billion mark in the development of residential, industrial, office and retail complexes, managing assets from Rochester, New York, to Maryland to Virginia and down the Eastern Seaboard, with its primary focus in South Florida.
Compson Associates is a multifaceted, fourth-generation development firm, thanks to the recent addition of a partner’s eldest son, Carl Anthony Klepper. Vice Presidents Bobby D’Angelo and Carl E. Klepper, Jr. are at the company’s helm, being hands-on as they train and teach the newest generation. “Each family member grooms another family member,” says Klepper Jr. “We don’t expect the next generation to do it the way we did it. Otherwise, there would be no growth. We encourage employees to put their own spin on things. Different minds think differently. Since it’s a family-run business, all family members respond to one another and point the company in the same direction; that works.” After hours, they enjoy boating, golfing, Sunday dinners and taking family vacations together. “A lot of collaboration goes into what we do.” Their success is driven by a deep commitment to communication and reputation.
Klepper Jr. and D’Angelo were lucky enough to be groomed by partner and father-in-law James Comparato for over 25 years. They were both taught to handle all aspects of the development business, including but not limited to condos, offices, retail, shopping centers, single-tenant, storage facilities, multifamily, single family, property management and sales.

Compson Development was originally founded in 1946 in Rochester, New York, by Anthony Comparato, to develop large tracts of single-family homes. The company later evolved into developing shopping centers, office buildings, condominiums and multifamily residential homes. Compson’s expanding operations warranted additional offices in Virginia and Boca Raton to support new projects along the Eastern Seaboard. In 1987, Comparato founded First United Bank in Boca Raton where he served as Chairman of the Board for 10 years, until the bank sold its 33 branches, serving South Florida with approximately $1 billion in assets to Wachovia Bank in 1997. Comparato was also a longstanding member of the Boca Raton community with many charitable pursuits. Comparato’s long-standing presence in the Boca Raton community went far beyond development. It reflects a strong drive to charitable work and a genuine dedication to giving back to the community.
Comparato’s three children — James, Robert and Thomas — inspired the name “Compson,” short for Comparato and Sons. They each played key roles in the company until 2016. Klepper Jr. and D’Angelo then expanded and diversified the company’s business model, transforming it into a real estate development firm to include all facets of real estate with numerous private business units forming within its corporation. These businesses include a real estate management company, a transaction brokerage firm, a custom homes division, a development company and now a finance arm.
Compson Homes is a home division that builds custom and spec homes. The brand builds luxury homes in Boca Raton ranging from $12 million to $30 million. KMD Investments is a boutique, closed-end, $150 million finance arm focusing on high-yield real estate. Compson handles all real estate development and procures projects. Its concierge program, Concierge Property Solutions, manages apartment complexes, office buildings, shopping centers, condominiums and HOAs. Oceanview Realty oversees transactional real estate and purchase brokerage transactions, representing buyers and sellers.
Compson’s future is bright — and busy. The company has 600 multifamily units in the pipeline, 200 condominium units all in the planning stages in South Florida and 150,000-square-foot Class A offices scheduled to break ground this summer.
With no stopping in sight, there is already an ongoing discussion for D’Angelo’s family members who are heading to high school and college to join the ranks upon their return. Family has always been at the heart of the company, a value that continues to guide them — as reflected in their motto: “Building with Integrity.”
