Fifth-Generation Diamond Jeweler
Eyal Cohen, owner of The DiamondLab in Boca Raton, was skeptical of lab-grown diamonds when they came on the jewelry scene. After all, he had spent his career working with natural diamonds.
After doing his research, Cohen became a fan of lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are created by placing a seed from a natural diamond into a machine. The diamond is grown to the desired size in 28 days. They feel the same, look the same and smell the same as natural ones. Lab-grown diamonds are also ethical and environmentally friendly.
Cohen, who is partners with Chris Lang, learned that lab-grown diamonds were 80% to 90% lower in price than natural ones. “Natural diamonds don’t keep their value like they used to,” he says. Lab-grown diamonds’ low prices pushed natural diamonds’ prices 30% to 40% lower. As a result, natural diamonds can’t keep their value like they once did.
If you want to upgrade your natural diamonds, you trade in the original one and have to pay much more to get one at the size that you desire. But, if you buy the desired one as a lab-grown diamond, you don’t need to trade in your original, natural diamond. You keep the natural one and you just buy the lab-grown diamond. You pay much less for the desirable size of your lab-grown diamond.
At The DiamondLab, buy a single loose diamond or choose from their exquisite diamond engagement rings, wedding bands, studs, necklaces, bracelets and many more. They often make custom jewelry to accommodate the client’s wishes. “You name it, we have it,” says Cohen. He also runs a natural diamond, appointment-only showroom near The DiamondLab called Diamonds By Eyal.
Being a fifth-generation diamond jeweler, Cohen has spent his life in the diamond industry. The family business has been passed down from an uncle to a nephew in each generation. His family has been in the industry for more than 200 years.
Cohen received his gemology degree from a private school in 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel, where he was born. He was pursuing a career in counterterrorism when his uncle (who was a top diamond dealer and icon in Hong Kong) wanted him to join the family business in 1996. After Cohen earned his MBA in business, he entered the diamond industry. He then spent 25 years selling loose diamonds wholesale around the Southeastern United States.
The DiamondLab celebrated its two-year anniversary on November 20. Thanks to high demand, they’re looking to expand the space.
