When Ira Fox, M.D., entered the world of pain care, few were treating chronic pain with diagnostic and therapeutic injections. As an anesthesiologist, he recognized the benefits of this new approach.
In 1996, he and his now retired partner, Jay Lasner, M.D., launched Anesthesia Pain Care Consultants, the first South Florida group specializing exclusively in the management of pain.
“When Jay and I started this group, our goal was to help as many people in pain as we could,” says Dr. Fox. “It’s been a very gratifying journey.”
This year, his practice saw its 100,000th patient.
Dr. Fox maintains five board certifications through the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians; the World Institute of Pain (where he is a fellow of interventional pain practice); the American Board of Pain Medicine; and the American Board of Anesthesiology, with an added certification in pain management.
Patients who turn to Dr. Fox generally are looking to avoid surgery or have had surgery and continue to experience pain. Obtaining a correct diagnosis is key to a successful outcome. He often sees patients who have been previously misdiagnosed and treated without sustained pain relief.
“If you don’t have the correct diagnosis, you won’t be able to achieve long-term relief for the patient,”says Dr. Fox.
He and his staff offer a wide range of treatment options, including physical therapy, medication management, all types of spinal injections andnerve blocks, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cell signaling therapy, implanted pumps, minimally invasive spine surgery, ozone injections for bulging or herniated discs and medical marijuana as well as medical legal expert testimony.
Dr. Fox is on the editorial board of the Pain Physician and Pain Practice journals, which giveshim the opportunity to evaluate research for possible publication. The practice also serves as a resource for the spinal cord stimulation industry, responsible for many important studies.
