To Patricio Espinosa, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.N., the brain is the most complex and intricate system in the human body. “I love the challenge of understanding the brain, it’s why I wanted to study neurology,” he says.
As a board certified neurologist with more than 22 years of experience, Dr. Espinosa recently opened, in October 2021, the Espinosa Neuroscience Institute.
Originally from Quito, Ecuador, Dr. Espinosa earned his medical degree from the Universidad Central del Ecuador and completed an internal medicine and neurology residency at the University of Kentucky. His Masters of Public Health degree is from Johns Hopkins, and he later completed a fellowship on epilepsy, neurophysiology and sleep disorders from Harvard Medical School.
“This new journey allows me to care for the community in many ways,” Dr. Espinosa says. “I want our patients to have the feeling that they are more than their health problems — they’re like family to us.”
His mission to support the community extend to his work in Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, where he provides medical attention for people who have little to no access to a neurologist. Annually, he devotes two weeks to provide free neurology services in Tena, Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands.
The new neuroscience institute cares for patients experiencing memory disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, back and neck pain, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, migraines, peripheral neuropathy among other neurological conditions.
The staff at the Espinosa Neuroscience Institute takes pride in the cultivated positive work culture that allows them to serve their patients. Their enthusiasm translates into affinity care delivered. “The goal is to empower patients to feel ownership as they know there’s always someone available to happily assist them no matter what,” he says.
Inside the 5,000-square-foot institute, Dr. Espinosa and his team of doctors, nurse practitioners and medical assistants houses an Electroencephalography, Electromyography & Nerve Conduction Studies Laboratory and a Clinical Research Unit that conducts clinical trials for new therapies related to neurological conditions.
“We’re working on researching therapies for Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss,” Dr. Espinosa says. “With our vast knowledge of how to treat patients and practice outstanding neurological care, my goal for this institute is to be the best Neuroscience Center in South Florida.”
