Dr. Martin W. Roche, Dr. Nicholas Sama and Dr. Ryan Simovitch have different specialties but share a common goal —helping patients move better, recover faster and return to their everyday lives. These board-certified physicians serve on staff at HSS Florida and are making significant strides (sometimes literally!) in orthopedic care.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin W. Roche, Director of Arthroplasty, helps patients determine whether they need a total knee replacement or may benefit instead from a ligament-preserving partial knee procedure. He performed the world’s first robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacements and performs more than 700 arthroplasty procedures a year. In fact, Dr. Roche performed a groundbreaking, robotic-assisted partial knee replacement on Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn back in 2024 that enabled her to resume competitive skiing. “When I first started, 80-year-olds were just handed canes and walkers,” he recalls. “Now, they’re out playing pickleball, tennis and are active in the gym. Performing surgery on both young and retired athletes is becoming more predictable through advanced technologies and healthier patients.”
Director of Trauma, Dr. Nicholas Sama treats fractures, dislocations, and traumatic injuries involving nearly every part of the skeleton. His practice combines hospital-based trauma care with a robust outpatient presence. Oftentimes, his patients are discharged from emergency rooms then receive same-day or next-day office appointments. Dr. Sama conducts thorough evaluations and explains surgical and nonsurgical options in terms patients understand without feeling overwhelmed. One Vietnam veteran was so grateful, he gifted Dr. Sama one of his Purple Hearts — an unforgettable gesture the surgeon still treasures.
Dr. Ryan Simovitch, a Florida native with roots in Boca Raton, Director of the Shoulder Division, brings innovative approaches to rotator cuff repair and shoulder replacement. For shoulder replacements, he uses computer-assisted navigation to execute surgical plans with precision. He is among the highest- volume shoulder replacement surgeons, performing more than 300 a year. Dr. Simovitch also helped launch a Tendon Seam device designed to create a stronger rotator cuff repair and potentially improve healing. Whether treating a professional athlete, weekend golfer, or pickleball player, his focus remains the same. “I treat every patient as if they were a family member.”
