Sol Guerrero, M.D., knows the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment of chronic disorders like diabetes, hypothyroidism and osteoporosis.
“Many of these metabolic and glandular disorders may be hereditary – have a genetic link,” she says. “If one of your parents, for example, has diabetes or thyroid dysfunction, you may have a higher risk of developing a similar problem.”
A board certified endocrinologist with Tenet Florida Physician Services in Boca Raton, Dr. Guerrero specializes in treating diabetes, thyroid disease, thyroid cancer, adrenal disorder, metabolic bone disease and pituitary gland disorders. For thyroid cancer, the main treatment is surgery, she says.
“Some require further treatment, such as radioactive iodine ablation therapy, which is done after surgery. The long-term outlook for most thyroid cancer patients is excellent.”
Because endocrine and metabolic disorders require careful monitoring, Dr. Guerrero sees many of her patients on a regular basis and develops close professional relationships with them.
“Along with managing these conditions, we talk about the importance of managing weight, a healthy diet and an active lifestyle,” she says. “That’s important for everyone but especially for patients with high blood pressure, diabetes or obesity.”
In the current health environment, Dr. Guerrero frequently schedules virtual visits to stay in touch with her patients, who are often at high risk for infectious disease.
“When they come into our office, we observe all patient safety guidelines and ensure social distancing in the waiting areas,” she says.
A native of the Dominican Republic who grew up in South Florida, Dr. Guerrero has been practicing endocrinology for nearly a decade. The mother of three moved to the Boca Raton area in 2014.
“I enjoy the beach, reading and spending time with the many family members who live here,” she says.
Dr. Guerrero stays current in her field as a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Thyroid Association and the American College of Physicians.
“I encourage adults who experience any symptoms such as unexpected weight changes, worsening fatigue or a mass in the neck area to get an immediate evaluation,” she says. “Early diagnosis is so important for determining the best treatment for these types of disorders.”
