A Day To Remember

Memorial Day Events To Kick Off Your Summer

by

While June 21 is the official first day of summer, Memorial Day has come to represent the unofficial start of summer. It’s a day to honor our military heroes, but in the U.S., it’s also a day to hit the beach, parks and the outdoors in general. There are plenty of activities for all ages. Here are just a few.

If you are into racing, then you know the Sunday before Memorial Day is the Indy 500, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s been on that day since 1974, except for 2020, when it was held in August because of COVID-19. This will be its 107th year for the 500-mile, 200-lap race.

The Hyundai Air & Sea Show is slated to take place May 27-28 in Miami Beach. The show features all six branches of the U.S. military as well as police and firefighters. There also will be a cigarette offshore powerboat (also known as a “go-fast” boat) racing exhibition and extreme water sports.

If you are looking for a more “traditional” Memorial Day event, the Town of Davie and Boy Scouts of America are hosting The Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony in downtown Davie. The parade begins at 10:15 a.m. just west of S.W. 70th Terrace and ends at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.
