Keep the champagne flowing for Lou and Edith Bluefeld of Boca West Country Club as this is a very big year for the lovebirds. 

Lou marked his 100th birthday Jan. 9 and his wife will celebrate hers on Aug. 4. The couple, who met in Baltimore when they were 16, commemorated their 80th wedding anniversary on Feb. 23. 

The Bluefelds have lived full-time at the country club since 1985. They have two children and two granddaughters.

“Lou and Edith are a fabulous couple,” Matthew Linderman, president and COO of Boca West Country Club said in a press release. “Whenever one sees them they have a gleam in their eye like they are on their honeymoon.” 

Shortly after the nuptials, Lou served in World War II. Edith took a three-day train trip across the country to say goodbye to Lou before he shipped out from California. She wrote him every day of the three years he was in the military. When the war ended, the two returned to Baltimore where Lou worked in his family’s kosher catering business, just as he had as a teenager. Wanting to spend as much time together as possible, Edith worked as his secretary.

Lou’s family business, Bluefeld Caterers, was charged with koshering the White House kitchen during the announcement of the Camp David Accords under President Jimmy Carter. It was the first time a kosher meal had ever been served at the White House. The business also catered President Richard Nixon’s Inaugural Ball as well as events for members of Congress. 

“We’re blessed that our minds are good,” Lou said in a press release. “We’re so thankful we’re both well. “More and more, health means everything and money is nothing. We’re so lucky to be at Boca West and have lots of friends here that are like extended family.”
